fruit and veg stall, taken at santorini island, greece. 2006.
quite a few people are asking me to update my blog and wondering what i've been up to. well, i'm still waiting on my PR/TR. so at the moment, my schedule usually comprise of cleaning, searching for recipes, cooking, baking, surfing the net, reading. very domesticated.
so anyway, my parents and brother came over for CNY. it was really great to have them over. we had our reunion dinner at home and had way too much food. and had heaps of sashimi and mango. yum. it was fun to have them here although we were almost pooped out at the end of everyday 'cos my dearest brother wanted to play golf everyday. so yes. our whole family played everyday and it was really hot towards the end of their trip here. i am really surprised that i have taken such an interest in this sport as i used to think it was really boring and an old man's game. but i have to say, it is pretty fun at the same time can be really frustrating. boon and i are thinking of taking up proper golf lessons now. but we'll see. his schedule is pretty tight.
and on another note, our cell is multiplying. that's good news. we'll be a busier come May 'cos we'll be leading and hosting the cell at our place. hmm... i don't know if our house is child friendly though (we'll have to break up into kids and adults) but i suppose if the perera kids can run around our house and not hurt themselves or break anything, we'll be ok. i hope.
so that's all that's been happening.

OH MY GOSH. he's a genius. i don't usually gush about something/somebody but i have to make an exception. Roger Federer might be the best tennis player yet. (sampras is long forgotten now.) i think everyone is in awe with this guy. gosh. i just watched his match against Roddick. gosh. everything was going so well for him. though i have to say, Roddick was pretty out of it. anyway, federer makes amazing shots. amazing. yes i know everyone is gushing about him, but just watch him, almost 9 out of 10 times, he's playing well. and to top it off, he's a humble and charming guy. love that guy.
i can't say much for the women's tennis though. quite tragic, in my opinion. not very exciting i have to say. it might have picked up a little 'cos of all the pretty russian girls flooding the tennis scene of late. but other than that, it's pretty boring, not many amazing shots to watch.

boon and carms outside the pantheon, rome. dec'06
it's been a wonderful crazy busy december.
lots of traveling and i love traveling.
lots of little adventures. good and bad.
some of you have heard already... so you can skip this.
#1 - boon's luggage was lost between cleveland/NYC and london. after much pain, calls and threats, we got his luggage 2hrs before we head to rome. tsk tsk.
#2 - bad service with BA and london heathrow airport. argh. terrible. absolutely terrible. please try not to fly with them. ever.
#3 - rented a car in rome to drive to florence. 1hr drive out. we decided to drive back to return it. traffic was so bad and stressful. so unless we have a GPS, driving in rome is out. so we decided to take a train to florence instead. absolutely brilliant decision. stressfree traveling. and i'm glad we got there 'cos Florence is gorgeous. love it. beautiful place.
#4 - my handbag was stolen in barcelona. good thing was that my wallet and passport weren't in there. the most expensive thing is my parents' new digi cam and the pictures in there. argh. thank goodness it is only a day's worth of pictures but it was taken when we were at Gaudi's Sagrada Familia! argh. it's one of the most amazing building i've ever seen. seriously. but we are amazed at how discreet they were and how professional they are. my bag at my feet (silly me to leave it on the floor), boon nxt to me and andrew seated directly opposite me. all 3 of us didn't see it happen. how is it possible, i don't know. ah wells. that aside, barcelona is a nice place to be. i think we'll go back again. it's a little quaint and quirky. it's not like rome where pple are all dressed up in gucci and prada. everyone is a little more quirky, more individualistic. they have their own sense of style. more small local designers. it was quite tragic 'cos we were there during the Christmas period... all shops are closed on christmas and boxing day. we thought we would be able to shop on boxing day. ah wells. it's fine. we'll just have to visit again. :)
#5 bad service at heathrow airport AGAIN. first the business class aisle took at least 30-45mins to clear 'cos boon was on business. then we were shoved to the first class counter... and the lady at the firstclass counter was terrible. she was so slow and then missed the LAST AISLE seat for me. and lectured us on why we should do online check-in nxt time! my goodness! and then told us to run to our gate cos it was closing!!! then i got the middle seat (i absolutely hate those.) and to make matters worse, one guy nxt to me had terrible BO. oh gosh. can faint man. and nxt, the audio for the inflight entertainment was scratchy (apparently the whole plane was like that) and then i decided to read. but my light wasn't working!!! it was unbearable. so i had to change seat. thank God the other seat wasn't so bad. no BO, light working and bearable scratchy sound though stuck in the middle. i had such a bad flight that boon decided to upgrade me to business on my flight back to perth. :) how nice.
#6 - friend got caught with alcohol in system while driving in kl with all of us in the car. erm first hand experience of "police at work" in kl. you can just imagine. we have some doubts about the equipment though. it's so different from australia's. and the point is not to catch people drink driving but helping them out with a better lifestyle 'cos they immediately sent my friend off driving with alcohol in system. i don't even know if he was really over the limit. the police just poked his head into the car to smell the driver's breath. and the only way to know whether you are over the limit is just a positive or negative light. is that the way right? 'cos usually you know how much over the limit you are right? ah wells.
so, besides all these tragic incidents, the holiday was amazing.
saw lots. it would be much better if we had more time in each city.
i don't like running around, moving from one to another so quickly.
it's quite amazing to see the buildings you've learnt in uni. to see it in person, is amazing.
esp the sagrada familia. you realise how much it has influenced the city.
barcelona is an interesting city. gothic, modern and quirky. i like it.
florence, a beautiful, pretty city. would love to spend more time there.
rome, rich in it's history. a little too chaotic. lots of graffiti. shopping frenzy near the spanish steps. great place to people watch. lots of beggars too.
london, is massive and expensive. but can be quite pretty and surreal while walking the streets. the bad weather can be really annoying.
okie dokes. till the nxt time i blog, take care!
laters.

it's quite a last minute decision to travel to europe at the end of the year.
lots to see and experience.
the food, the sites and architecture...
ooh. exciting!
though this will not be a shopping trip, we heard from boon's italian colleague that there's a designer outlet near florence....

fun fun fun.

whoopee!

getting organised.
time passes so quickly. it's novemeber already. gosh. christmas is just round the corner. summer is almost here. time waits for no man. and i think i've not been a good steward of my time. argh. anyway, i'm trying to get my next phase of my life cranking. so that's that.
oh and i went back to singapore for a bit a couple of weeks ago. it's good to hang out with my family and friends. i did a little shopping. it was not too good because it's not sale season yet. went to the much hyped haji lane. a few good artsy, concept shops but some shops have too few products there. i wish they had more products. but i managed to buy some nice t-shirts, hopefully they are one-offs. i've not seen them in fareastplaza yet. i think it will be much better once more shops start openning around there. i didn't manage to scout around chinatown for some gems. the weather just put me off. the haze was really bad and the usual heat and humidity was a great mix for you to stay in air-conditioned places. it was a great trip back. the landscape is always changing. there's always something new and different. it's nice. i would love to explore more hangout places. we found a few good ones this time round but the problem is always time. our trips are always very rushed.
ah wells.
till the next time round.

only mums would think of them when you'd tell them that you've been doing much cooking and cleaning. it's cute. she must think i'm slaving over here. haha. *kidding* she knows i'm in no way slaving over here. i'm liking cooking but i can't say the same for washing up. but at times (this is going to sound really really weird, but at times, only sometimes) it can be quite therapeutic.
i think God has been kind to me. He's slowly initiating me into the life of a homemaker. He allowed me to enjoy cooking before i start working 'cos i can imagine what my life would be like if i started working and have to come back and we have to prepare dinner. i don't think i would have the same passion for it. i think. i don't know. i think it's all circumstantial. so hopefully when i start work (??? only God knows when), i'll be able to multi-task. that would be challenging. oh wells. but right now, it's a nice little holiday for me to cook and bum. not too bad. i think it should be coming to an end. i think.

just last week my mum saw this cute duck standing next to our pool. she was kinda amused. i too was. then this week, i saw a duck IN our pool. i was like "oh how cute." and so i went out to check it out. i was HORRIFIED by how dirty it was! argh. so i scared the duck away out of anger. i thought it got my point right. the next day, it brought a friend. one was basking in the sun, in the pool, the other, just watching. oh man. i had to run out to scare it away. argh. the pool was kinda dirty so i had to test the water. i realised it wasn't all the poor ducks fault. the pool ran out of chlorine which is probably why the ducks were having fun in our pool. so anyway, we have to add chlorine and put the pool cover on.
funny how our backyard is a breeding spot for our little friends of the environment. this morning boon and i were having kaya toast for breakfast in the backyard, and i spotted an egg shell on the pavement. and i was like "ooh the ducks had a chick!" that was my first reaction, 'cos i was telling him about the ducks... it was kinda near out entrance to the backyard... and well he looked up, and it was a little birdie with a little make-shift nest of a few sticks. we don't know what to do with the bird, it's chick and it's nest. but i think we have to get it to move.
lucky in both instances, i had witnesses. so i won't sound like i'm making up stories.

the last week and a half, i've just been accompanying my mum around. she came down for my long over due graduation which was alright. i wasn't as excited as my first one. i guess because it was over such a long time, it's kinda anticlimatic. but oh wells. i'm glad i'm done with it. argh. 5 long painful years. thanks for those who came down and all who brought me through the rough times. :) it was nice that my mum was here. she also brought a taste of home, a bottle of ya kun kaya. hahha.... :) the lady at the immigration let her through with it which was quite surprising as it contains eggs. but yes. little hoorah for us. i can't wait to get back in a couple of weeks. it'll be nice. friends, family and shopping. i heard my room has been invaded by my brother. sigh. i guess i can't keep that room for life huh.

These steelvase covers are designed by Todd Boontje in his collection, thinking of you at DWR. He loves to use recycled industrial materials in his designs and they are absolutely gorgeous. It arrives in a flat pack and you can shape it around your objects. I love it.

f o o d .
photo - chubby hubby
lately i've been cooking quite a bit. and i actually enjoy it. for most part of uni life, i didn't really cook much which is why this is a little unusual. it might also be the subtle influence of the food channel on the foxtel that influenced me.so anyway, combine the other thing that i do a lot, which is surfing the internet, which is where i usually find my recipes... but today, my surfing expeditions led me to food blogs. oh my! oh my! the pictures were gorgeous, the way they presented the food; i love the plates, garnishes etc. oh man. hahah. i sound like martha stewart. heh. but yes. i am a sucker of lovely place setting, cutlery, plates, linens and such. anyway, here's 2 of my favourite sites:
chubby hubby - he's a singaporean (i think or he might just be located in sg)! and he takes great photos of food that he and his wife makes or dishes they ordered. the food ranges from fancy to local delights.
delicious days - oh! the first food blog i stumbled upon and i was hooked. such lovely photos and some come with recipes too. liz, you'll love this site.
the pictures are really inspiring and seducing... i guess that's where my love for design comes in. the presentation of the dishes. i love it. so maybe i'll try my hand at some fancy dishes.

everyone always asks me what i'm up to.
so i kinda figure out my job title.
fulltime unemployed graduate architect and home maker.
yups. homemaker is a politically correct word to use.
sounds much better than housewife.
i'm always afraid of that word. that job title.
it makes me cringe even now.
i'm quite sure it was 'cos i was brought up in a all-girls school. all the girl power kinda thing.
maybe that is where my feminist side came from. heh.
but well i guess there's no denying that i am a full time homemaker (eeks) at the moment.
i don't know. i guess it seems like it's really tragic. there's so much to more to learn.
at the same time, i love the freedom to do anything.
paint, read and bum.
anyway,
i've found out my most hated job description of home making.
ironing.
i hate ironing. i don't do it very often. but i help when boon needs me to.
ironing 4-ply shirts just frustrates me.
i also realised, (guys, please note. esp those who don't have mums to iron their shirts for them)
raoul shirts are way harder to iron than zara. so get zara if you don't have someone to iron them for you. argh. the minor imperfections of the garment just drives me crazy. i'm not really a perfectionist, but when i'm ironing, those hard to iron creases just makes my blood boil. and argh! i take 15-20 mins to iron ONE shirt! man! and it's still not perfect. and it takes boon only like 5. i don't know how he does it every morning before he goes to work.
*
so i'll be shopping for tops that don't really need ironing for work.
i rather wash, clean, vacuum than to iron. argh. the pain. the torture.
so anyway, i'm off to sydney with boon tonight.
woohoo! shopping, visiting art galleries and markets.
and hanging out with a couple of friends there.
to the land of krispy kreme...
in the mean time you guys have fun in school and office. :)

gosh. the eagles (they are one of the 2 perth aussie football team. info for the uninitiated) fought back from behind to win the match again. and tragically, federer (tennis: french open) lost to nadal. argh. it's a sad sad thing. sigh. and then there's the world cup. i have to say, i was rooting for japan to win australia, but the aussies won by shooting 3 goals in the last 10 mins. gosh. that's crazy. so that's another upset.

the ceremony.
it happened really quickly. i was trying not to trip and walk down gracefully. and there i was, up at the front already. it was as i said quite surreal. i wanted to look around and see who's here and the place etc. but well i couldn't be looking all over as i walk down the aisle right? yeah. so i was just trying absorb everything in. i stumbled a little on my vows. i wanted to go through them the night before but i didn't bring the copy of my vows with me to the hotel. so anyway, i was also trying not to look at my mum because i know she'll be crying and all. well there was a little crying but at least it was short while we were up at the signing table. so that was alright. it went pretty smoothly except that the flower bouquets were not suppose to be like what they were. ah wells. it's not something that you can help it. so yes. moving along.... i love the bubbles. it was pretty. and no clean up. so that's good. and apparently there were heaps of food i didn't really eat much of it. that should be quite typical isn't it. and lots of photo taking etc. the usual. everything just happens really quickly. all the preparation for this moment that just slips by so fast. amazing. and the bridal party had fun taking silly photos with the photographers. like running and jumping, being carried and spun round and round until i collapsed on the ground. so yes. fun but tiring. and we're still waiting on our photos! argh.
please email any more photos of the wedding that i missed out please... and the girls, please send the photos of us at the pre wedding party and the night before shots yes? and any other photos that we don't have. ok i don't really have that many shots of the wedding dinner but i had loads of fun. and i hope you guys had too. the speeches, the songs and just watching everyone dancing. :)
before the ceremony.
this was the scene before the ceremony. the part that i missed. i think the place looked lovely. it was quite surreal. and really thank God that the weather held up for us. thanks to all who helped out in one way or another or even just sit and witness the occassion. and a huge thanks to ling for organising the decorations etc. thanks mark for taking all the lovely photos of the people and the bits that i missed. they look really lovely. i'm still waiting for our photographer for more photos. the bridal party had some ridiculous photos so that should be interesting to see.
it was really nice that most of my good friends from everywhere came. and that's just great. and my family all came down. that made it special. it was nice and cozy. there's more photos coming.

the factory girl.
i reckon it'll be an interesting movie to watch. if you watch the clip below of the late real life E.die Sedge.w.ick (remove the "."s if you wanna go0gle her), you'll know why. i thought the clip below was done really well. i love that clip. watched it 3 times over and over again. i didn't say i like her life, or her for that matter. but i just loved the way it was shot. i love old clips.

flowers, greece and commonwealth games.
ok so it's just under one month from our wedding day. and that and the house (and watching the commonwealth games), are the things that's been keeping me occupied after the whole visa episode. (i think i did mention awhile ago that i had some drama with my visa... anyway, those close to me would know andi'm not gonna elaborate anymore. too long a story.) so yes. it's a little hard to grasp this wedding thing. it feels like there's a lot to do, yet at the same time, when you do sit down and want to do something, there's not a whole lot you can do. at the same time i've got to pack my current room and unpack the stuff in the new place. it's realy strange cos i feel like my head is all over the place. like one minute you remember to do something and then when you're doing something else, you remember to do another thing. it's like endless. and today, i just spent the day surfing the net about greece. because in a month's time, i'll be swept off to the gorgeous Greece. ah. can't wait.
anyway i better get to unpacking/packing/ something productive. thought i should update a little since someone did tell me to write more! and i will try to blog more. for now, i think i've been on the computer for too long. ta ta!
ps: did i tell you i love the nice change in the weather? i think it's finally autumn.
